Tube and shell type heat exchanger working principles

Tube and shell type heat exchanger working principles

Shell and tube heat exchangers comprise of an arrangement of tubes. One set of the aforementioned tubes holds the liquid that must be either warmed or cooled. The second liquid runs over the tubes that are being warmed or cooled with the goal that it can either give the high temperature or ingest the high temperature needed. A set of tubes is called the tube bunch and might be made up of numerous sorts of tubes: plain, longitudinally finned, and so on. Shell and tube heat exchangers are ordinarily utilized for elevated force requisitions (with forces more amazing than 30 bar and temperatures more stupendous than 260 °c). This is on the grounds that the shell and tube heat exchangers are powerful because of their shape. Some thermal outline offers must be acknowledged while planning the tubes in the shell and tube heat exchangers.

The heat exchangers and the role it plays in modern society

Nowadays the life of human beings is too dependent on instruments and devices. Some devices are essential for the proper functioning of life, while others are nothing but luxury. One very important instrument or device presently in use is the liquid heat exchanger. The basic work of this device is to interchange heat between two mediums in direct contact or separated by some solid partition. There are many kinds of liquid heat exchanger available in the market and all the different types of the device find a unique application at different household or commercial places. Some of the commercial as well as domestic places of application for the device include refrigeration, petrochemical plants, power plants, natural gas processing etc. There are many other commercial and domestic places where the device has been used and they are air conditioning, petroleum refineries etc. As it can be seen, this is a very versatile device.

Parallel and counter- flow type heat exchangers

These are two simplest forms of heat exchangers which are widely used in various fields. In parallel type heat exchangers, the two fluids enter at the same point inside the system and flow in the same direction. Here, the temperature difference between the two fluids decreases from inlet to outlet. In The counter flow type heat exchangers, the fluids enter the system from two opposite ends and flow in opposite directions. Here, the temperature difference between the two fluids remains almost constant throughout their flow path. In both these types of heat exchangers, the flow of fluids is along the same axis. The fluids are mostly passed through two or more concentric tubes which enable the heat transfer to occur between them. Parallel flow heat exchangers require lesser surface area than counter flow ones as the average temperature difference of fluids is greater in them. These are heat exchangers are comparatively simple in construction and comparatively lighter in weight.

Effectiveness-NTU method for analysis of heat exchangers

Effectiveness-NTU method for analysis of heat exchangers

With heat exchangers there can be two types of problems. The first one is about the determination of the rate of heat transfer, temperatures of the fluid outlets and the pressure drops for an existing heat exchanger, so the heat transfer surface area and the dimension of the flow passage are available. The second problem is the determination of the dimensions of the heat exchanger to meet the specified pressure drop and heat transfer requirements.  If the pressure drop is not of concern, then in the case of the problems of the first kind calculation of the performance of a specific heat exchanger is required. And in case of the second types of problem designing heat exchangers for a previously specified performance is involved. If the outlet and the inlet temperatures of the cold and hot fluids and the total heat transfer coefficient are known or can be calculated easily in that case we can employ the LMTD method for solving the problem. In case the outlet temperatures are not known another alternative method known as the Effectiveness Number of transfer units or –NTU method is used.

Pillow Plate Heat Exchangers have unique designs, and are adapted for use mainly in the diary industry. Milk that is produced in diary industry is collected on huge stainless steel tanks. In such circumstances, the pillow plate heat exchanger is used to cool down the milk by connecting with the entire surface area of the huge bulk tanks containing milk. The pillow plate heat exchanger uses a unique technology where a thin metal sheet is welded to a much thicker metal sheet. The metal sheet is spot welded, and usually in the uniformly dotted pattern. After such welding, the part is put in high pressure, and the thin metal plate curves outward. The fluid that exchanges heat flows in these spaces which are formed due to such bulging. These bulges look like the formation of a pillow, and this exchanger is very economic and efficient for use in diary industry.
